10 Celebrities You Didn’t Know Were Gay

Celebrities try to lead a private life, but it seems to backfire no matter how hard they try. With cameras seemingly in their face at every moment of the day, it can be hard to keep things a secret. Even though it’s a task that requires a lot of effort, some celebrities have still been able to keep their love life away from the public; some are trying to hide their relationships with other celebrities, while others don’t want their sexuality to be shared.

It can be a shock to see that after years of thinking a celebrity is straight, it turns out they have been in relationships with members of the same sex the entire time without letting the information leak. After a certain amount of time (perhaps the result of frustration from hiding), celebrities can eventually feel comfortable in revealing their sexual preferences. After a big sexuality reveal, it becomes national news and talked about ad nauseam for weeks on end; other times it gets swept to the side and not many people mention it. In case you missed it, here are 10 celebrities that you might not have known were gay. You may have seen a few of these coming, but many will shock you after not realizing it this whole time.

Sam Smith

Sam Smith has accomplished more in the last year as a 22 year old singer than most people will in an entire lifetime. Smith rose to prominence back in late 2012 when he was featured on the song “Latch” by Disclosure. Smith quickly broke off to his own success with his debut album “In the Lonely Hour” that produced hits such as “Stay With Me,” earning him a handful of Grammy Awards.

Smith was believed to be straight for the first two years of his career until an interview back in May of 2014. Smith admitted that he was in a relationship with model and actor Jonathan Zeizel. You might not even know it unless you saw his acceptance speech at the 2015 Grammys when he said the entire album was about Zeizel.

Zachary Quinto

Zachary Quinto is now 37 years old, and got his start nearly a decade ago when he portrayed the character Sylar on the breakout NBC hit “Heroes.” Quinto played the main villain–that turned good–on the show for four years when the show ended. Now, Quinto is most noted for playing Spock in the new “Star Trek” films, along with a role in “American Horror Story: Asylum.”

For years, it was assumed that Quinto was straight, but surprised some people by coming out in October of 2011. It was after teenager Jamey Rodemeyer committed suicide after coming out that Quinto felt the courage to do so. Since then, Quinto has been an activist for LGBT groups and is now dating artist Miles McMillan.

Amber Heard

Amber Heard started her early 20’s by playing smaller roles in movies such as “Friday Night Lights” and “Alpha Dog” before getting breakout roles in “Never Back Down” and “Pineapple Express.” Heard has been working as a model and actress ever since then, earning bigger roles as the days go on. In “The Rum Diaries,” Amber Heard starred alongside Johnny Depp, to whom she married in 2015. Despite the fact that she is married to the mega star, Heard has said that she is still bisexual. Heard told Elle Magazine back in 2013 that she, “Didn’t want to look like I was hiding anything. I’m not, and wasn’t ever, ashamed.” Heard dated Tasya van Ree for four years before moving onto Depp and is an LGBT activist.

Bob Harper

Bob Harper got his start as a notable personal trainer by working with celebrity clients such as Jennifer Jason Leigh. Back in 1999, Harper was featured in the background of a Melissa Etheridge music video, and it helped him get selected as one of the two main personal trainers on “The Biggest Loser” on NBC back in 2004.

Harper has been on the show for more than a decade now, but nobody knew that he was gay until season 15 when he admitted it in one of the episodes. A contestant was having problems admitting their sexuality to their parents, when Harper told him that he could relate because he had to go through the same issues as a gay man.

Jim Parsons

Jim Parsons had been struggling along as an actor, working in commercials and not much else. That was until Parsons won the role of Sheldon Cooper on CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory,” which has been a ratings juggernaut for the last decade. The role has earned Parsons multiple Emmy Awards and has gotten him a gig on Broadway.

The show had been on for more than five years when some of the hardcore fans were surprised to learn that Parsons was gay when a New York Times article in 2012 said that he had been in a relationship with Todd Spiewak for more than 10 years. Parsons doesn’t talk too much about it, so it still surprises some people today when they learn about it.

David Hyde Pierce

David Hyde Pierce had been working in off-Broadway productions of Shakespeare plays throughout most of the 1980’s. In his first television role, Pierce landed on “The Powers That Be,” a political comedy. It was a couple of years later that Pierce would get his biggest role as Niles Crane on the long running “Frasier” that earned him four Emmy Award wins.

Throughout the series, Pierce always seemed to have a steady girlfriend, but some people questioned his sexuality. Finally, after the show was over, Pierce revealed that he was gay through his publicist back in 2007. The publicist happened to be his boyfriend of 24 years, and the two were finally married the next year.
