  The Ecotourism Market: Selling Sustainability Live Experts Class


“The Ecotourism Market: Selling Sustainability”

WHAT: An online interactive learning series on marketing all forms of sustainable tourism, including ecotourism with an emphasis on creating market access for sustainable destinations, effectively utilizing social media for community based tourism, and utilizing the GSTC criteria.

HOW: Participants will attend live webinars by each speaker during the months of January and February. Participants will be able to engage with presenters and other participants via the webinars and discussion board. Participants that attend at least three of the four modules will receive a certificate from TIES.

WHEN: The course will take place during the last week of January and first three weeks of February. The course has four modules, and only three are required. Each presenter will be present live twice. All times are in Eastern Standard Time (the same timezone as New York City). You can use this link to check your time zone. We provide two times in order to accommodate as many time zones as possible.

Module 1: January 27 at 9am EST and 10pm EST: Dr. D’Arcy Dornan has over 20 years of international experience in tourism and travel with focus on project management, public relations, and market analysis among other topics. D’Arcy will focus on social media best practices for community based ecotourism initiatives. 

Module 2: February 3 at 9am EST and 4pm EST: Ferdinand Weps is a Managing Partner of Training Aid, a global provider of knowledge capital based on sustainable practices. Ferdinand will discuss and help you implement useful website and marketing tools and performance indicators, and share practical tips that you can use to optimize your digital presence. Specifically, you will learn how to implement practical solutions for your website such as search engine optimization (SEO) basics, web analytics tools to monitor your performance, and of course, tools to track and measure your social media success.

Module 3: February 17 at 10am EST and 9pm EST:  Randy Durband is the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Randy will discuss the role of the GSTC and marketing opportunities that exist via the GSTC.

WHO: The experts forum program has been developed to offer a practical training and skills development opportunity for tourism business leaders, conservation and development professionals, and other industry stakeholders engaged in tourism and community development.

Dr. D’Arcy Dornan has significant international professional expertise in the tourism, travel and hospitality industry and in academia. His life and work have given him rich and rewarding experiences in government relations and international affairs, strategic communication, market analysis, research and business development, partnership strategy, talent recruitment (placement, training and retention), public relations and sustainable destination and program/project development.

Ferdinand Weps is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of TrainingAid, an online platform specialized in skills training for tourism destinations and industry professionals. He is a tourism and digital strategy expert with a passion for practical digital marketing plans and techniques that help the online presence of travel and tourism websites. He has build his expertise in this area through many years of professional experience in organization and project management, web development, graphic design, and technology integration for both online and in-person educational programs. He previously worked as the Membership and Operations Director for the The International Ecotourism Society, a global membership organization with 650 organization members in over 100 countries. Ferdinand has a B.A. in Cultural Geography and Area Studies with concentrations on livelihood assurance in developing countries, sustainable tourism, and urban studies. He also has a background in tourism business and hospitality management. He is an avid traveler and loves to discover new places by meeting local people and their culinary traditions.
Randy Durband
RANDY DURBAND
CEO, Global Sustainable Tourism Council 

 


Randy Durband is the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).  He brings to his leadership position of this important UN-supported NGO a unique blend of skills and experience based on the two career paths he has taken in travel and tourism – twenty-four years in senior leadership positions at some of the finest U.S. tour operators, plus five years in sustainable tourism.  His first career included serving as President for Travcoa, INTRAV, and Clipper Cruise Lines, (all brands within TUI Travel plc), and Executive Vice President of Tauck World Discovery.

Randy now supports Sustainable Tourism as CEO of the GSTC.  He brings his knowledge of the business of travel, his global network of travel professionals, and a passion for sustainability to support sustainable tourism, poverty reduction through tourism development in emerging destinations, authenticity in heritage destinations, and tourism destination stewardship. He has served as technical advisor for tourism for the UN agencies ILO and UNESCO, other development organizations and foundations; during which he worked in the development and promotion of community-based tourism destinations and training programs in several developing countries.
