Birds in Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary  
   
The avian population is the main attraction at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary supports hundreds of bird species including both resident and the migratory birds. The resident birds that can be spotted in the sanctuary include waterfowls, cuckoo, owl, egret, herons, kingfishers and water ducks. Some commonly spotted migratory birds include Siberian cranes, parrots, teals, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle, etc. Birds like Siberian cranes remain as flocks and can easily be spotted.House boats and motor boats help in the deep exploration and a wonderful time in the lake. House boats are often preferred as they are stealth and do not disturb the birds 
 
 
 
  
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary) is situated at Kumarakom in Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Set in the Kerala Backwaters the bird sanctuary is an ornithologist's paradise and a favourite haunt of migratory birds.

Cuckoo - The Koel 
Cuckoo – The Koel is 39- 46 cm in length. It is a long and slim birds. It has a long tails, pointed wings and curved bills. The male is glistening black, with yellowish green bill and crimson eyes. They have short wings but long tail. The female is dark brown, with profusely spotted and barred with white. Females have green beak and red eyes. Males and females are distinct in appearance. Tail is dark gray and slightly white in colour. The crown is dark brown and the bill is pale green in colour. Females are slightly smaller than the males
 
They are mostly found in every part of India. They can also be spotted in the Batla National Park, Corbett National Park, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Pench National Park and Barwala Bird Sanctuary.
 
Indian Peafowl 
Males are about 107 cm long and females are about 86 cm long. Males weigh around 5 kg and the females weigh around 3.4 kg. Both have fan shaped crest on their head. Three toes face forward and one backward. The most attracting part of the peacock is the fan or train of feathers that grow from its shimmering blue back. The train is approximately 1.6 m in length. It can also raise its train of feathers. The peahens do not have train, her plumage is brown, white and black in colour. They have royal blue neck and breast. Indian Peafowl is one of the most colorful bird. It is the largest member of pheasant and turkey family.
 
Peafowls are found all over India. In Haryana they are found in almost every village. They can be spotted in Sariska Tiger reserve, Kanha National Park and Ranthambore National Park. It is the National Bird of India 
  
Kingfishers 
Kingfishers are medium-sized birds with large heads, long pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. There are 93 species worldwide and 13 species which occur in India and 7 in Kerala 
  
Grey Heron 
The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from the ice in colder regions. It has become common in summer even inside the Arctic circle along the Norwegian coast 
  
White Ibis 
White Ibis is a large marsh bird with naked black head and neck, and long, stout, black, down curved curlew like bill. The bird is found throughout Indian Subcontinent and Myanmar. 
  
Spoonbill Stork 
Spoonbill stork is a beautiful bird, perhaps the most easy to identify because of it ‘spoon-shaped’ bill. 
  
Rosy Pelican 
This bird is found in great congregations on jheels and lagoons, it is white or rose tinged with a tuft of yellow feathers on the breast, has a slight crest and the feathers of the forehead end in a point above the bill. 
  
Siberian Cranes 
Four species of crane visit Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary, including the famous Siberian crane, but the Sarus crane is resident. A large grey bird with a red head and nearly as tall as a man, the Sarus crane is much venerated as a symbol of marital bliss in India. Sarus cranes pair for life, and locals believe that if one dies, the other will die of a broken heart. The Sarus courtship display is one of the most magnificent bird spectacles in the world. The couple bow, circle round each other with outspread wings, throw back their long necks, take great leaps into the air, all the while uttering their far reaching, trumpeting call.
